What a circuit-by-circuit
audit actually is

What does a heat trace audit actually check?
A circuit-by-circuit audit tests four things per circuit: insulation resistance (megger), continuity, ground fault, and amp draw under load compared to nameplate — plus a walk of jacket condition, end seals, junction boxes, and thermostat setpoints against the design. Findings get graded held or flagged, with photos on anything written up. The audit guide walks the full list.
How is an audit different from a walkdown?
A walkdown is a visual, no-instrument look at the system — panels, insulation, visible cable condition — and it’s free. An audit puts a meter on every circuit and produces dated test records: insulation resistance, continuity, and amp draw, circuit by circuit. Most plants start with a walkdown and scope the paid audit from what it finds.
How long does a circuit-by-circuit audit take?
It scales with circuit count, not square footage — a hundred-circuit plant and a twelve-circuit pump station are different jobs. Most facilities in our record run one to three days on-site, with the report following after. The system audit page lays out what a crew walks, and in what order.

What the regulator,
the auditor, and the insurer want

What does NERC EOP-012 actually require?
Generating facilities registered under NERC carry an annual cold-weather-preparedness duty — identifying cold-weather-critical components, verifying freeze protection against each unit’s Extreme Cold Weather Temperature, and documenting it. The hard implementation deadline is October 1, 2027. The EOP-012 guide covers what a generating facility has to be able to show, and by when.
What counts as documentation to an auditor?
Dated, attributable, tied to a specific circuit — a statement that work was performed is not documentation; a line saying which circuit, on what day, read what, taken by whom, is. As-found and as-left readings both, not just the flattering one. The closeout guide shows what a complete package carries.
Is Patriot prequalified to work at our facility?
Patriot holds ISNetworld and Avetta registration, is a licensed electrical contractor, IBEW/NECA affiliated, and carries 100% OSHA 30 field supervision — the credentials most industrial prequal programs screen for before price ever comes up. Cable choice, scope,
and who designs it

Self-regulating or constant wattage — which do I need?
Self-regulating cable adjusts its output to pipe temperature and is the default for freeze protection; constant wattage holds a fixed watt-per-foot output and is what process maintain-temperature applications and some classified-area jobs call for. Pipe size, maintain temperature, and area classification all factor in. The cable guide has the full comparison.
Does Patriot self-perform every trade on an install, or sub it out?
The same crew assesses, installs, and warranties the work — heat trace, insulation, electrical, and design under one contract, one schedule, one accountable point of contact. That’s the difference on a multi-trade job: no finger-pointing between contractors when something doesn’t line up. The turnkey installation page covers the scope.
Who designs the heat trace layout — do we need our own engineer?
Patriot’s design team produces the isometric drawings, panel schedules, and heat-loss calculations the installation is built from, in-house. You can bring your own engineer of record if your project requires one; most retrofit and maintenance work doesn’t. See what a design package includes on the design services page.

What it costs, and
when to book it

What does a freeze event actually cost a facility?
Four buckets: equipment damage, downtime and lost production, the emergency-repair premium over a scheduled one, and regulatory or insurance exposure. None of those numbers are ours to give you — they’re yours, and they vary by facility. The freeze cost framework has a worksheet that totals your own inputs.
When should winterization work be scheduled?
Fall, before the first hard freeze — decisions in August through October, work executed September through November, ahead of the season that finds every weak circuit for you. Qualified crews book up each fall, which is the practical reason to scope the work early rather than the week before a cold snap.
How much does a walkdown or an audit cost?
The walkdown is free — a straight read on where your system stands, with no obligation attached. A circuit-by-circuit audit is priced against circuit count and site access once we know the scope, which is exactly what the walkdown establishes. Most plants use the walkdown to decide whether the audit is worth booking.
05 05Monitoring

What CIAC catches
between audits

What is CIAC monitoring, and do I need it?
CIAC is remote, circuit-level monitoring — alarms on open circuits, ground faults, and controllers out of band, instead of finding out a line failed on the morning it froze. It’s worth it on circuits protecting anything you can’t afford to lose sight of between audits; it isn’t required on every job. The CIAC monitoring page covers what’s involved.
Can heat trace circuits be monitored remotely without CIAC hardware?
Not meaningfully. A panel light tells you a breaker is on, not whether the circuit downstream is doing its job — the failures that matter (a drifted setpoint, a degraded cable, a nuisance ground fault trip) are invisible from the panel. Does monitoring replace the annual audit?
No — monitoring tells you a circuit tripped or went dark; it doesn’t tell you insulation resistance is drifting toward zero on a circuit that hasn’t failed yet. That’s a megger reading, taken annually. Monitoring and the annual audit answer different questions, and most documented programs carry both.

Repair, replace,
and why it’s half the system

How do I know if insulation needs repair or full replacement?
Staining, open seams, crushed sections, and a jacket that’s lost its seal are repair candidates if the damage is localized. Insulation that’s soaked through, or corroded pipe underneath at multiple points, usually isn’t worth patching. The insulation guide walks the assessment and the decision rules.
What is corrosion under insulation (CUI), and how serious is it?
Moisture gets trapped between the pipe and the insulation jacket and corrodes the pipe wall from the outside, invisible until the jacket comes off. It’s one of the more expensive failure mechanisms in industrial piping because it’s found late, and it’s a major reason wet insulation is worse than none at all.
Does insulation condition actually affect heat trace performance?
Directly — insulation is half the system. A heat trace cable sized for a properly insulated pipe is undersized the moment the jacket fails and heat starts escaping to ambient air instead of holding the pipe. A circuit that meggers fine can still lose the pipe if the insulation around it has failed. See insulation services.
