A food plant is a freeze-exposure paradox: it runs more water than almost any other industrial facility — CIP loops, sanitation stations, washdown lines, sprinkler mains — while deliberately holding entire rooms below freezing. The systems that serve the cold spaces are exactly the ones winter finds first.

Daily washdown makes it worse. Heat trace in a washdown environment takes water, chemicals, and physical abuse that office-park heat cable never sees. Jacket damage and moisture ingress accumulate silently — a circuit can read energized and still be failing, and nobody knows until the coldest week of the year.

The exposure is regulatory as much as operational. FSMA expects documented, verified preventive controls. Your insurer issues winterization recommendations with your name on the responsible-party line. When the freeze event happens, “we had heat tape on it” is not a defensible answer — a documented program is.

A frozen line in a food plant triggers a hold-and-disposition decision: what was exposed, what has to be destroyed, what the customer gets told. The repair bill is the smallest number on the incident report.

Daily sanitation degrades cable jackets and floods junction boxes. Circuits fail without tripping anything visible — only a megger test finds them. Our standard: 500 VDC insulation-resistance testing, every circuit, documented.

CIP Supply & Return Loops

Clean-in-place supply, return, and hot-caustic loops are the plant’s sanitation backbone. A frozen CIP line doesn’t just stop cleaning — it stops production, because nothing runs until sanitation verifies.

Sanitation & Washdown Hot Water

Washdown stations, hose drops, and sanitation hot-water mains — lines that get soaked daily and freeze nightly in winter. The freeze/thaw cycle on washdown piping is the most common failure pattern we find in food plants.
